JAKARTA - After Indonesian airliner Lion Air has been warned several times by different authorities about the increasing number of delays with the airline, it has now announced that it is to take immediate actions. A number of changes are forced through with the airline in the coming days. These changes are not voluntarily though.
The Ministry of Transport, for example, has demanded that Lion Air is to 'park' 10 to 13 of it's planes on several airports where they can be used as replacements for delayed planes. From July 19, a total of 13 planes will be kept aside for this demand, according Edward Sirait, general director of Lion Air.
"These planes will be ready to fly and can be used in case of a problem with other planes like delays or technical difficulties," Sirait said. He added that keeping those 13 planes on the ground will not lead to closure of routes by Lion Air. More time is added in between two flights with the same plane, the so-called turn-around time.
The first steps for a longer turn-around time on airports were taken last week when a number of changes in the flight schedule of the airline were made. Many flights that depart early on the day have been moved forward with 20 to 40 minutes to accomodate longer transits and thus to decrease the chance for delays.
Lion Air said that it might be possible that these stand-by planes might cause the number of flights on certain routes to be decreased. The price of the tickets might be influenced as well, since the demand for flights will not lower, but the number of flights will.
