SURABAYA - The regional police of Pamekasan on the island of Madura has arrested a total of 36 illegal Afghan immigrants. All of them were adult males, most of which have not yet been identified. The people were arrested in a house belonging to a villager of Tlonto Ares after neighbors informed the police about their whereabouts.
At first, 27 illegal immigrants were arrested, they were al present in the first house entered by the police. At another location nearby, an additional nine people were arrested. The illegal immigrants were on their way to Australia to ask asylum there. The illegal route normally runs through a few of the many islands in the Indonesian archipelago.
Anjar Gunadi, a spokesperson of the regional police, said that the immigrants were to depart for Australia today. They were apprehended before they could continue their travels though. Most likely the people originate from a quarantine center in Bogor, West Java. They arrived in Pamekasan with a chartered bus.
The Afghan men were to board a boat belonging to one of the villagers of the village. Because weather in the area has been quite bad, they were not able to leave the island of Madura yet. All people are questioned and are currently in custody at the regional headquarters of the East Java police for further processing.
Sahenal, a villager, said that there was some suspicion in the village when it proved that a group of bearded men was present there. "To avoid things we don't want to happen to us, we reported the incident to the regional police directly," said Sahenal.
