LIPPO CIKARANG - Starting from June 26, 2011, Lion Air will fly to Kuala Lumpur. With departure at 09:05 local time from Jakarta, the two capitals are now linked by Lion Air as well. Fares are cheap also, starting from as low as just 25 euro, inclusive of luggage! Departure from Kuala Lumpur is at 13:00 local time.
With opening the route between Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur, Lion Air is entering the battle zone for this route with competitor and low-cost airline AirAsia. They are currently operating seven flights a day between the two capitals, but offer less service than Lion Air is currently offering to it's passengers.
Passengers on Lion Air flights do not have to pay for luggage up to 20 kilograms. On top of this Lion Air has easier regulations for refunds and passengers can check-in online where they can choose a seat they like for free. AirAsia passengers have to pay for these options, which is not helping groups of passengers to fly cheap as they have to pay to sit next to each other.
Lowest prices for tickets between Jakarta and Kuala Lumpur are at around 300.000 Rupiah, which is some 25 euro for a single trip. This goes for Lion Air as well as AirAsia. But passengers for AirAsia also have to pay for their luggage and a seat if they want to sit next to their travel partner.

Don't forget to prepare for looooooooooooooong delays as well!

My longest delay ever was with Garuda, and forced me to wait for 4,5 hours at Soekarno-Hatta. All other delays - whatever the airline - were limited to 1,5 hours.. which is still reasonable considering they fly around bad weather nowadays.. not a very bad idea if you ask me.

Consider yourself lucky then
Flying with Lion is taking the chance of being delayed or involved in some kind of accident (not always serious though). I prefer to avoid them if I can. There are other alternatives to Garuda.

Lucky? Maybe, but planning your trip better may also make a different. Flights earlier in the day are less vulnerable to delays for example. Especially holiday makers should profit from this.
Well, you can prefer to avoid them, fact is that they are the biggest airline in passengers in Indonesia, followed at a little distance by Garuda.
Alternatives are only a few, especially if you avoid Garuda because of the price. AirAsia flights with QZ as code are not funny as well, as they still use those old Bouraq planes with Spanish texts everywhere..
Other airlines by far do not match the vast network of destinations of Lion Air and Garuda, severely limiting your movement in Indonesia if you ask me. Merpati for example simply cancels your flight one day before departure. Reason? 'Technical problems'.. Yeah, you'll get your money back, but that doesn't bring you where you want to go.
But maybe the new Mandala will show up as a good alternative now they are backed by a fairly large investor that brought 1 trilion Rupiah to the game.
There are no statistics (I can't find them maybe) but weather is a very important factor for delays. Most people don't want to see this, because it's their delay caused by weather elsewhere or earlier on the day, not affecting them directly until their flight is delayed.. but people should learn that flying through tropical thunderstorms is best avoided if just slightly possible.

A lot of delays are caused by Garuda. Because of the fact that it is a state-company, every domestic airport is forced to prioritize take-offs from Garuda. That automatically causes delays by other companies. I prefer Lion Air above Garuda because they give me as a frequent flyer real priorities which Garuda doesn't give although I'm frequent flyer member of Garuda as well.
Garuda is a state company...that means also prone to corruption. And corruption can causes dangerous neglects.
