WONOSOBO - The Mount Dieng volcano, in the neighborhood of Wonosobo in Central Java province, is showing signs of increasing activity. The Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysics Agency BMKG has therefore raised the alert status of the volcano again, from 'careful' to 'dangerous'.
The renewed activity of the volcano that last erupted late September 2009, can be seen in the form of a small plume of white smoke rising from one of it's craters. Measurements show that increasing amounts of CO2 are being exhausted from the volcano. This odorless and transparent gas is deadly for humans and animals as it replaces oxygen in blood.
Tests held at several locations downhill indicate that the CO2 has not yet started to flow down the slopes. At the bridge in Sumberejo, a rabbit stayed alive for example. The cloud of steam that appeared earlier, can now be seen more often and also reaches a little higher than before.
The number of tremors has also increased. In the period between January 2001 and May 18, 2011, the volcano only produced three tremors that were recorded. Between May 18 and 22, the number of tremors reached 62 in total. Since that time, more volcanic, but also tectonic tremors are recorded.
Residents in the area are asked to be alert for sudden changes caused by the volcano. Because CO2 is odorless and has no color, residents can best keep a distance of 1.000 meters from the crater that is now activating.
