DENPASAR - The Jakarta Post reports that the Denpasar city administration will no longer give licenses for convenience stores in order to protect the interest of traditional traders. The 24-hour convenience shops are being blamed for declining sales at traditional markets and small local traders in Denpasar.
The freeze on new permits is effective April 1, 2011. Authorities estimate there are 150 convenience stores operating in Denpasar, many of which lacking complete licensing. Denpasar authorities are in the process of surveying all convenience stores, closing those establishments that do not have legal permits.
Authorities are said to be currently focusing their investigations on convenience stores operated by Circle-K, Indomart and Alfamart.

Maybe the declining sales at traditional markets and small local traders in Denpasar also has to do with the simple fact that a lot of people know have an option to buy the things they need / want at:
- a clean, hygienic, air condtioned, well lit, 24-hours shop instead of a dirty market or warung and with a parking area straight in front of the shop?
- at a time (around the clock) that''s convenient to them and not only to the seller?
- at a published price and without having to "tawar-tawar" ?
- to be able to pay with debit or credit-card if necessary?
Tip for the DPS municipality: Don't try to save the obsolete local (dirty) markets, focus on the future.

On top of that, 24-hour shops like these are selling their products at higher prices, and even pay PPn, so they should be serving different markets as well. But people choose convenience over other places, which I can imagine, walking on the local traditional market looking for strawberries having to deal with all kinds of 'less fresh' odours.

Convenience for whom ??
A "bunch"of orang turis or a group of "orang kaya " ?
Most of de Indonesian consumers are people like me and "you" , without more US dollar or euro in our pocket.
And they are also writing about :
" many of which lacking complete licensing. Denpasar authorities are in the process of surveying all convenience stores, closing those establishments that do not have legal permits ".
