The TransJakarta busway as a good example LIPPO CIKARANG - Earlier I wrote about the TransJakarta busway as a bad example of how things should be taken care of if implementing public transport. But this system does not only have negative sides of course, so TransJakarta also deserves a more positive piece of writing if you ask me.

Since my first writing about the system, I was able to use it several times again, during which I also gave some attention to the positive aspects of traveling on the TransJakarta system, which are normally called busway in daily life and on signs in the street indicating their lanes. I found out that there are more positive things than I first noticed, especially now their network has been extended and ten lines are operational.

With a ticket that costs just 3,500 Rupiah - a price that hasn't increased for years now and also is cheaper than using a regular bus just one time because macho drivers with their big mouth order their staff not to give discounts on shorter trips by passengers - you can now travel to many parts of Jakarta, whether this is a direct connection or one with one or more transits at official bus stops.

These transfers are free indeed, but only for as long as you do not leave the bus shelter. When exiting the bus, most shelters will only enable you to exit or to get on a bus back. This can be useful however, since it might be pretty hard to get to the door in a full bus. And when it departs from the shelter, yo can not jump out of it anymore. What you can do is stop at the next shelter and take the first bus back to the shelter where you actually wanted to get out. Free of charge.

At larger bus shelters you can often transfer to several other routes. Main shelters like Harmoni and Senen are large transfer hubs for several lines, which makes these shelters a travel-through for large amounts of passengers. Staff is always ready to serve you and point you into the right direction, because one part of the shelter in Senen is about 200 meters away via a pedestrian bridge, safely above traffic and out of the direct sun of course.

The number of buses has also been increased on most routes and the newest routes, those from Pluit to Pinang Ranti and Cililitan to Tanjung Priok, run straight through Jakarta and also make contact with a number of other routes during their trip. This makes transiting onto the other lines much more easy than it used to be. These two routes have almost doubled the number of transit shelters, which is a huge improvement in 'free' travel with the busway system.

Construction and improvement of the existing - often separated - lanes is ongoing as well. During the start of the TransJakarts system, it was assumed that the existing layers of asphalt would be strong enough for these heavy buses. That proved to be wrong. Huge potholes, cracks and other discomfort for the passengers was the result. Now, these lanes are renovated into concrete lanes, step by step so that shelters can stay open as much as possible.

In the coming months and years it is expected that improving the quality of the current routes and extending the current network of ten routes will have priority. There also seem to be plans to construct some form of an MRT-system, a lightrail connection from downtown Jakarta towards the south. That should be a nice addition to this network of public transport facilities.
