MALANG - The activity of the Mount Bromo volcano in East Java province is still high. The 2.329 meter high volcano is almost constantly in eruption and exhausts dark clouds of ash. The height of the ash clouds however is slightly lower compared to several weeks ago. The volcano also produces volcanic tremors.
That the volcano is continuously erupting can best be seen at the 400 to 800 meter high dark cloud rising from the crater of the Mount Bromo volcano. Volcanic material is expelled from the crater with force and reaches up to 500 meters over the crater rim. The volcano also rumbles regularly, a sound that can easily be heard.
Several villages in the direct environment of the volcano have been dealing with ash rains ever since the eruption first begun, late last year. These ash rains are generally fairly light, but due to regularly returning ash rains, a thick layer of ash has been formed in several areas over time. Normal rains in the area add to the danger; they can cause sudden mud flows.
Residents in the area are advised to keep a distance of at least two kilometers from the crater of the volcano. People are also advised to wear a face mask when ash rains hit the area. In some cases, ash rains can be heavy, causing trees to snap off and power cables to break under the weight of the volcanic ash.
