MANADO - The Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysics Agency BMKG has announced that it expects tsunami waves, caused by the 8.9 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Japan earlier this afternoon to hit parts of eastern Indonesia. The tsunami waves are expected to hit parts of Papua, North Maluku and North Sulawesi around 18:00 West Indonesia time.
Residents in the seaside city of Manado in North Sulawesi province, closed their shops and evacuated themselves from the coast as it is anticipated that tsunami waves will hit the area. Manado is located at the coast, and residents are heading for higher areas in the city to wait and see what is about to happen.
Schools in the city were closed earlier and students were sent home as well. This decision was made after the BMKG issued a tsunami alert for several regions in Indonesia. A number of residents however is still at the beach, convinced that the tsunami will not be big at all when it washes ashore here later this early evening.
