JAKARTA - The police in Greater Jakarta has announced that it will use their firearms if demonstrations outside the South Jakarta court building get out of control. Today is the second day of the hearings of terrorist suspect Abu Bakar Bashir, a high-profile case. However the first ring of police is not armed, the second ring is, said police spokesperson Baharudin Djafar.
Baharudin explained that demonstrations that go wild are a threat to bystanders, people involved and the police so they have to do something in that case. "We will then use the means we have available, this also means we can use our weapons. Warning shots at first, but we can also aim at protesters if really needed."
"We do have rubber bullets that we can use as a warning. But it has been proven in the past that if the police stops there, it can get very disorderly. That is something we have to prevent," Baharudin added. The security force however, is not larger than during the first, short, hearing last week. Some 2,250 to 2,500 police is ready to secure the area.
