PEKANBARU - Forest fires once again burn forests in Riau province in southern Sumatra. Almost the entire provice is now covered in a curtain of smog. The Meteorologica, Climatological and Geophysics Agency BMKG in the city of Pekanbaru has said that the most recent sattelite images show at least 50 hot spots in southern Sumatra alone.
The biggest amount of hot spots can currently be found in South Sumatra province though. A number of 15 hot spots were counted here, while there were 'only' 13 in Riau province. Because there is little wind in the area the smog is not scattered and thus causes a thick blanket over the area, which even partially blocks out sunlight.
The smog currently causes some delays in air traffic in the region because visibility can drop to as little as 300 meters at the airport of Pekanbaru. Low visibility like this is unsafe to take off or land, which causes delays of flights. The smog is also not good for people's health, they are advised to wear a face mask at all times when outside.
