JAKARTA - Seen the ever increasing number of passengers on the KRL commuter trains in Greater Jakarta, the state-owned company running the trains, PT KAI Commuter Jabodetabek, will increase the number of trains as soon as possible. As early as next year, more trains will be running on the routes operated by the KRL commuter trains.
According to the current plans, some 130 new carriages should be taken into use on the current routes. At the moment the railroad company already has an agreement with a Japanese firm for the delivery of the carriages. Eventually these new trains should make traveling with the KRL commuter trains more comfortable, since overcrowding is a huge problem at the moment.
"We indeed have made preparations to run more trains. We have a cooperation with a Japanese company. Until now we have 20 carriages delivered to us already," said a spokesperson for the railroad company. The purchased carriages are second hand, from the 1980's and 1990's. They have been fully revised before they were sent to Indonesia, so they can be used for many years to come.
The carriages that have been ordered will be put to use on all existing routes of the KRL in Jabodetabek, the Greather Jakarta area. The route that will receive priority treatment is the one serving between Jakarta and Bogor since that line is good for some 60 percent of all commuters on the KRL network. Most likely two new trains will be created here, while other routes will get one new train each.
The number of commuters that use the KRL commuter trains is currently growing with some 20 percent each year. During 2010, the average load on the routes was 500.000 passengers a day. This number is expected to increase to some 600.000 travelers a day during 2011.
