SERANG - The height of the ash clouds that are exhausted by the Mount Krakatau volcano in the Sunda Strait now reach heights up to 1200 meters. This is not very unusual for the volcano, but does show that the volcano is still very active. The ash cloud is currently blown into southern direction, towards the Indian Ocean.
Anton S. Pambudi, head of the observation post for the volcano located in the village of Pasauran at the western coast of Banten province in the western tip of the island Java, said that the volcano could clearly be observed in clear weather. Every once in a while some clouds do obstruct a direct view on the volcano though.
Pambudi said that the material that is currently exhausted by the volcano, like sand and small stones, have a temperature of 600 degrees Centigrade when they are exhausted from the crater. Residents and visitors to the volcano are warned to keep a safe distance from the crater to avoid accidents. Based in the frequence of tremors produced by the volcano, the safe distance is now set at two kilometers.
However tremors are an important part of the activity of the Krakatau volcano at the moment, the monitoring seismographs on the slopes have not been functioning since late December. This is caused by the fact that the solar panels that supply energy to the equipment has been covered in volcanic ash ever since, so no power is supplied.
