JAKARTA - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono wants to expand Greater Jakarta - to perhaps as far as Sukabumi - to fight congestion in the capital, according to his spokesman. "The President plans to develop Jakarta. There will be an expansion to Purwakarta, Sukabumi and other areas to curb congestion in Jakarta," Presidential spokesman Julian Pasha told reporters on Tuesday.
The concept had been implemented in other capital cities such as Tokyo, Japan, and Canberra, Australia, Julian said. Jakarta would still be the capital of Indonesia under the plan, he said, but the center of government would be moved to another area.
Julian declined to state when the concept would be implemented, adding that the expansion would take at least 15 years, The government was still considering two options to curb congestion in Jakarta: expanding the Greater Jakarta area and moving the capital elsewhere, he said. "The discussion had involved many elements, but the government has yet to decide," Julian said.
