PASURUAN - The volcanic activity of the Mount Bromo volcano in East Java province has caused heavy damage to the tourism industry in the area. The volcanic ash, emitted by the volcano, covers a large area where normally people make a living from tourists. The areas most heavily hit are Cemorolawang, Ngadisari and Probolinggo.
The thickest layer of ash is deposited in the area of Penanjakan in the district of Pasuruan. The most important tourist attraction for the Mount Bromo volcano in this area has been closed. The area is covered in 10 to 15 centimeters of ash, which has been emitted by the volcano in recent weeks. Many trees in the area have broken under the weight of the ash as well.
Several villages in the area have seen power cuts because the large amounts of ash cause power lines to snap. Falling trees cause extra problems here as well. The roads in the area can hardly be passed because of the slippery ash. The additional rainfal in the area creates even worse road conditions.
The head of the Tourist Service in the district of Probolinggo, Tutug Edi Utomo, said that owners of hotels and motels are working hard to clean their property from a thick layer of ash so they are able to service guests again as soon as possible. On top of this, the large sandy plain of the Mount Bromo volcano - the caldera, which is the most popular tourist destination - is closed for now.
These measures and the existing problems cause tourism in the area to have grinded to a halt almost completely. The Mount Bromo volcano can only be visited from Tosari in the district of Pasuruan. Villagest closest to the volcano there are at a safe distance and did not have to deal with ash rains just yet.
