JAKARTA - Indonesian lawmaker Muhammad Hatta on Wednesday denied allegations that he requested a Rp. 100 billion ($11.11 million) bribe, the Jakarta Post reported.
Hatta, a Commission XI legislator of the National Mandate Party (PAN), described the allegations as 'impossible.' He is accused of asking Agus Santoso, head of the Bank Indonesia Employee Association (IPEBI), for a bribe.
According to the allegations, the lawmaker requested the sum to smoothen talks on the Bank Indonesia Annual Budget (ATBI), the Financial Services Authority (OJK) and the draft bills on currency and fund transfers.
Hatta admitted he had directly met Agus once while representing PAN in a discussion on Swiss currency. After that, Agus and Hatta had a private meeting in the lawmaker's office at the House of Representatives.
Agus claimed that during this meeting, Hatta requested the bribe. The legislator, however, claims that the two only exchanged name cards to know each other. Hatta said that his cleric (or ustadz) was present at the meeting as they both wanted to perform their prayers.
"It's impossible that I had demanded a bribe in front of the ustadz. Go ahead and check with my cell phone provider if I have ever contacted him or not," the PAN lawmaker alleged. Hatta also said that he has not had any contact with Agus since the first meeting at the House of Representatives.
