MAGELANG - Earlier this year the Borobudur temple complex near the town of Magelang in Central Java was closed due to an eruption of the Mount Merapi volcano. Soon, this complex should be reopened to the public, at least partly. Reopening is scheduled for later this month.
The head of the technical service for the Borobudur complex, Iskandar Siregar, said that it was the general plan to reopen the temple later this month. Dozens of volunteers and employees have been working for weeks now to clean the Borobudur temple structure of the layer of ash, deposited by the volcano. This a painstakingly slow process because the stone used for the temple is porous and could get damage when touched by ash.
Siregar said that it would not yet be possible to reopen the temple itself to the public. Too much work still has to be done in order to make that possible. At the moment the temple itself is only cleaned for 20 to 25 percent. So tourists will not be able to climb the temple structure itself. They can still view the temple from the plain around the temple though.
In total some 57 cubic meter of volcanic ash has been removed from the temple. This is a total of 14 to 15 truckloads. The flooring can easily be cleaned, but the statues are all manually cleaned with the help of vacuum cleaners to limit possible damage to the structure from the 7th century.
