YOGYAKARTA - The Center for Volcanologic and Geological Disasters PVMBG, has lowered the alert-status of the Mount Merapi volcano in Central Java to level three, where this was level four. Lowering the status was only done after careful inventarisation of the current state of the volcano. It proved that the activity of the volcano was still decreasing further.
The Mount Merapi volcano erupted late last month for the last time. The more than 300 victims from this series of eruptions were mainly caused by the second and largest eruption of the volcano early November. This eruption also was the most heavy one in over a century for the volcano and mainly caused casualties because of the hot pyroclastic flows that were sent down from the volcano, burying people in thick deposits of volcanic material.
