YOGYAKARTA - The government has finally decided it wants a Yogyakarta governor elected democratically; No longer a position automatically entitled to the sultan.
Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Djoko Suyanto said after a Cabinet meeting discussing the issue that the government would propose the point in its final draft on the bill on the special status of Yogyakarta, which is expected to regulate succession of leadership in the monarchical province, among others.
"Article 18 of the 1945 Constitution mandates that a governor, a head of administration, is elected democratically," Djoko told the press Thursday at the Presidential Office.
"Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X and Sri Paduka Paku Alam will remain the No. 1 persons in the region, entitled to certain privileges. But executive leaders, who are demanded to be accountable, should be elected by the people," he added, referring to the incumbent Yogyakarta governor and deputy governor, respectively.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said earlier he wanted the bill on Yogyakarta's special status to be passed into law before the sultan ended his prolonged second period in October 2011.
Yudhoyono said the sultan, who has been serving as Yogyakarta governor since 1998, actually wanted to step down from the gubernatorial position in 2007, but decided against it after the President requested him to remain a governor until next year.
