YOGYAKARTA - The international airport of Yogyakarta, Adisucipto, will be closed until at least November 20, 18:00 local time. The volcanic activity of the Mount Merapi volcano is still very high, that it is decided to keep the airport closed for another five days to take away all uncertainty. Earlier, the airport had been closed to November 15, with a possibility to extend this, depending on the current situation.
The general director Air Traffic of the Department of Transport, Harry Bakti S. Gumay, explained that the volcanic ash originating from the Mount Merapi volcano still causes problems. "The airspace is still full with ash, which can cause severe problems for air traffic." The decision to extend the closure of the airport is taken after careful consideration with the Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysics Agency BMKG and the Center of Volcanology of the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources.
The next five days of closure will be used to check the conditions further. If it is proven that the air is clean enough, flights will be resumed after those five days. Passengers that want to travel to Yogyakarta are advised to take a flight to Solo or Semarang. From there they can take transport overland to their final destination of Yogyakarta.
By now it has become obvious that the long closure of the airport has an enormous impact on the regional economy. Hotels report ever decreasing numbers of rooms being occupied and traders in the city also see their turnover drop because a lack of tourists, domestic as well as international.
