YOGYAKARTA - The head of the Geological Agency, R. Sukhyar, has said that the amount of energy stored in the Mount Merapi volcano since the eruptions that took place from 3 to 8 November, is about equal to the amount of energy it stored after the first large eruption on October 26. This is one of the reasons that the danger zones of the volcano have been reset earlier today.
Satellite images also show that the amount of sulfur dioxide that is exhausted by the volcano is also decreasing. This means that the magmatic activity inside the volcano is decreasing as well. During the large eruption of November 5, 120 kilotons of sulfur dioxide was put into the sky daily. On November 8, this had already decreased to 40 kilotons, and now amounts are even hard to detect on those images.
The danger zone around the Merapi has been adapted since early this morning for most areas. For Klaten and Boyolali the safe distance is now 10 kilometers, for Magelang this is 15 kilometer and for Sleman the safe distance is still 20 kilometer. This is related to the fact that the shape of the volcano has changed and the crater has opened up towards the south and southwest.
During the eruptions that occurred since October 26, all of the hot pyroclastic flows that have been exhausted by the volcano came down the southern and western slopes. The lava dome that is forming at the peak of the volcano at this moment can only break and flow out towards the area of Sleman if this was to happen any time soon.
The volcano is to be monitored closely to determine the safe zone. Measuring instruments have once more been placed at several locations around and on the volcano. Most of this kind of equipment was lost during the recent series of heavy eruptions. Rivers that have their source on the slopes of the volcano can all pose a danger because the large amount of materials deposited by the volcano.
