YOGYAKARTA - With two tickets Batam-Jakarta-Yogyakarta we made an effort to get to our final destination of the day quite early in the morning today. When I checked the news enjoying a fresh cup of coffee I found out that the airport of Yogyakarta was still closed and that this was likely to stay this way for some time to come. So no direct flight to Yogyakarta today.
The first flight from Batam to Jakarta departed as scheduled at 09:20 from Hang Nadim on Batam and around eleven we arrived safely in Jakarta. There we received the confirmation that Yogyakarta was still closed and that we would not be able to use our transit tickets to that destination. We were kindly requested to report ourselves to the Lion Air desk for 'assistance'.
I would like to have the chance to fly to Solo if that airport was still open and even Semarang would be an option because I wanted to avoid traveling to Yogyakarta by train or,m even worse, by bus. That is why I wanted to hear what Lion Air had to offer me. And that was pretty simple at the end, we were able to board a flight to Solo 'directly'.

Arrival at Adi Soemarmo airport near Solo, still over an hour away from Yogyakarta city.
And that direct indeed was direct, not waiting a few hours without any certainty that we would fly at the end. We received our boarding passes and were able to board the plane right away to sit down at our seats in row 15. Within 20 minutes we left from Jakarta and about one hour later we touched down at Solo Adi Soemarmo airport without any problems, only in the vicinity of a huge thunderstorm.
I didn't want to wait too long with the ongoing trip to Yogyakarta because I did not know what to expect entirely. I ordered a taxi at the counter and only had to pay 205.000 Rupiah for the trip all the way to Jalan Prawirotaman in Yogyakarta. The driver had just cleaned his car from volcanic ash, but was hit by more ash and bad weather during the trip to Yogyakarta.
Just over an hour later we entered the ring road around Yogyakarta via the Janti fly-over. During the trip indeed some volcanic ash, rain and some mud, but most ash was already washed away by earlier rains in the area. The neighborhood of the hotel - we found a room in Tulips Hotel - it was just a little dusty, like elsewhere in the region.

Early in the evening, dozens of people watched the raging water of Kali Code river in downtown Yogyakarta.
After a quick late lunch, checking in into the hotel and picking up the motorcycle we shopped around a little. On the way back I made a short detour around a part of the northern ring road to see what the current situation was, but it was not too much out of the ordinary. The Code River, which runs through downtown Yogyakarta, was swollen, but because it was already dark, it wasn't that special as well.
The plan now is to hit the road in the morning and drive towards Kaliurang as far as is allowed at that moment. I know enough small roads that lead higher up the volcano, but I don't really feel like trying my luck with that after over 100 people are killed in that area. When leaving early, we might even be able to see some of the erupting Mount Merapi from the city as well.
