JAKARTA - A wealthy Muslim cleric is being charged with violating the country's Child Protection Act for marrying a 12-year-old girl and sexually abusing her, prosecutors said on Thursday. Wisiyanto claimed that under Islam, this unofficial marriage, which is his second, is acceptable. However, the news has outraged Indonesians nationwide.
45-year-old Pujiono Cahyo Widiyanto, also known as Sheikh Puji, of Semarang in the Central Java Province, is the owner of a religious school in the area and married 12-year-old Lutviana Ulfa in 2008 when Indonesian law established that the minimum age for legal marriage is 16.
"We recommend six years of prison for him. He has been proven legally as being sexually abusive towards women, especially towards this underage person," said prosecutor Suningsih, who is part of a group of five currently prosecuting Widiyanto.
According to the law, Widiyanto faces a maximum prison term of 15 years and fine of Rp 300 million (24,000 euro). However, a six-year prison term is being sought after as he already spent time in jail since his arrest.
During the trial, 43 witnesses have testified and Widiyanto is scheduled to appear in court next Thursday. Prosecutors said they are convinced that the Semarang District Court will issue an 'adequate sentence.'
Indonesian law has strong penalties against pedophilia. However, as in the case of Widiyanto, unregistered and therefore unofficial marriages are not uncommon in rural areas.
