JAKARTA - On the sidelines of the 8th Asia Pacific Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies Conference, which is being held in Jordan, Indonesian Red Cross chairman Jusuf Kalla met with about 300 Indonesian migrant workers, offering help to settle labor issues.
Kalla called on Indonesian nationals who have not been treated properly, have been tortured, or have had unpaid salaries, to report the cases to local authorities. He also urged them to contact a lawyer, use existing non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and learn local laws as the Indonesian government must be resourceful to protect its citizens.
Around 300 Indonesian migrants are currently working as maids in Jordan, but many have been facing labor issues, even those who have been properly housed for the past six months. Many of the problems have not been solved, but they have been unable to return to Indonesia because of the lack of proper documents.
Kalla also talked about helping migrants through Jordan's Red Crescent and the Indonesian Embassy in Jordan even if they are unable to pay for legal guidance. "The Indonesian ambassador to Jordan must settle the problems as soon as possible. If attorneys are needed, let me know. The Indonesian Red Cross is ready to help," Kalla said during the meeting in Amman Jordan.
