DENPASAR - Radar Bali puts the current number of people suffering from HIV/AIDS in Bali at around 7,000 people, a 75% increase from the 4,000 victims counted just four years before in 2006. The official count is put at 3,659 people according to confirmed cases recorded since 1987. The actual number of cases, now put at 7,000, reflects the "hidden" number of sufferers believed to be living in Bali. In 2010, a total of 421 new HIV/AIDS cases were recorded in Bali with 54 deaths attributed to the disease.
According to the man in charge of the Bali Health Department's HIV/AIDS program, Dr. Gede Agus Suryadinata, heterosexuals are the group most at risk of contracting HIV/AIDS in Bali. He explained: "All risk factors have experienced an increase. The largest jump has, however, been among heterosexuals. Heterosexuals represent 69% of all known cases."
According to Agus, that while sufferers broken down by age are not generally recorded, it is known that children under the age of one year and those over the age of 60 are now counted among HIV/AIDS victims. He also said that new cases among children, mothers and the elderly are all increasing in Bali. The greatest number of sufferers are found among people between the age of 20 -39. The frequency of cases are found in Bali's capital of Denpasar, and the regions of Buleleng and Badung.
