JAKARTA - A head of the Islamic Council of Scholars (Majelis Ulama Indonesia, or MUI), K.H. Effendi Yusuf, supports earlier words that corrupt persons should be allowed to receive a death penalty for their actions in certain cases. The organization that decides what is and what is not halal in Indonesia, is now tagging a large number of people in the country without much hesitation.
Earlier, a call to not say final prayers for corrupt persons that had died, was carefully picked up, while it is still a hot topic. It is an obligation for all Muslems to fully take care of a deceased Muslem in any case. Yusuf said that there should at least be much heavier punishments for those that had committed corruption. The MUI does not have the authority to make laws in Indonesia though.
Yusuf added that these serious crimes should however not be directly related to religion. One influential Islamic cleric, Malik Madany, has stated earlier that those who have committed corruption should not receive any prayers when they are prepared for burial since corruption in Islam - and the real world outside that - is something that creates a heavy burden on the population.

Corruption is so rampant that unless an effective deterrent is in place it can't be eradicated. But death penalty as penalty? Hmm, I think that is far-fetched.
