JAKARTA - Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Djoko Suyanto presented Wednesday an Indonesian citizenship document to former leader of the now-defunct Free Aceh Movement (GAM) Hasan di Tiro, who is being treated at Zainoel Abidin Hospital in Banda Aceh.
The document was accepted by Hasan's nephew, Tengku Fauzi Zainal Abidin, at the hospital's Intensive Coronary Care Unit where the 84-year-old Hasan is being treated. Aceh Governor Irwandi Yusuf and former GAM leader Malik Mahmud were present at the occasion.
Hasan has Swedish citizenship and has lived in exile for around 30 years. Djoko said Hasan had requested repatriation for “quite a long time” but the Indonesian government had only processed the request early in 2010.
