A fist look at Pangandaran PANGANDARAN - Pangandaran has become a well-known - and of growing importance - tourist destination. Normally you will find hundreds of buses with thousands of passengers from the area of Bandung here. There are also foreigners though, several hundred of them are present at any time in this large village and some of them do actually live here.

I never really felt the need to travel here. This opinion was mainly formed because you have tot take the bus here and I have never loved buses a lot. I didn't also really like to go to Pangandaran just to see it, since it doesn't seem that special as well. Yes, it is in Lonely planet, but they list everything, so that is not a very good measurement as well.

I also hardly hear people talking with enthusiasm about this large village named Pangandaran. Because it is located at and near the beach, sea food is plentiful here for sure, but that is not really what I like as well, unless I am very hungry. Those large shrimps are an exception however, but who doesn't like them?

And still I am in Pangandaran now. And to be different than most tourists, I am not spending my night in a zero-star (but melati-class) hotel with a view on the Indian Ocean, but in the kampung at several kilometer distance from the water. No air-conditioning, warm water or even a kipas, but the benefit is that a possible tsunami will most likely not be harmful here.

Yesterday in the afternoon, a little too late, we arrived here and were picked up by a sister of my girlfriend and a friend of her. Those two 14-year old girls can do what they want here, driving on a motorbike without driving license, license plates and helmet.Police here is seen as something from the big city, something unusual here. They only have them at the big intersection with traffic lights 'over there'.

When we arrived home, I got acquainted with the people that I will call my family-in-law in a few months time. Normal folks by the way, so I won't bother you with the details. After a quick snack of fried chicken with white rice I had a refreshing shower and just after it became dark we got on the motorbike ourselves to find our way into the direction of the tourists.

We had a drink on a terrace of a restaurant that was named 'The Only One'. It was not the only one, we were the only guests at the time we arrived, because the Saturday night was still early and it is not a high season as well. Then, places like this have to survive on people that spend months here and some tourists that find their way here by accident.

When we wanted to go home, it started raining a little. The market looked quiet and the only loud sounds was some music originating from somewhere in the market on that same beach. I soon felt that this was nothing like my favorite Saturday night and decided to go home so we could sleep early. This would also mean we could wake up early the next day.
