SIDOARJO - The main thoroughfare in Porong, closed several times already because of mud from the mud volcano nearby, will be raised with some 80 centimeters to avoid future problems with mud flowing onto the road. A stretch of road with a length of one kilometer will be raised as soon as possible.
The head of an executive service of the Public Works Ministry, Djoko Murjanti, announced these improvements in Jakarta. Heightening the road is needed to prevent passing traffic from being forced to stop time and time again as soon as some mud from the huge pool trickles through the temporary dams at the location.
Unfortunately the plans for raising the road are not final yet. Experts don't want to give any guarantees over the strength of the new road, because of the nearby mud pool and large numbers of heavy vehicles that pass the road on a daily basis. Djoko said that this should be investigated further before works could begin.
There are also plans to close the road for any traffic. People should then use a route that is some 35 kilometers longer than this direct connection. Traffic on this route however is so dense that a total closure is not a real option at the moment. The construction of a long bridge over the mud volcano is also considered.
Rerouting the toll road that has been closed down years ago is also work in progress. But purchasing the estate needed for the construction doesn't run very smooth. At the moment just ten percent of the route has been purchased. There is no real solution yet then just raise the current road and the adjacent train track until a more permanent solution has been found.
