SIDOARJO - The train track and main road between the large city of Surabaya and Malang has is threathened to be flooded once again near the Sidoarjo mud flow. At several locations along the main supporting dam along the road and the track, there is mud escaping via leaks.
The escaping mud is now slowly heading towards the main road. The new leaks are a mixture of gas and mud and are mostly to be found along the drainage canal directly along the main road in the neighborhood of Siring in Porong. It is the first time here that mud is also a part of the mixture escaping, causing fears that the dams may be weakened from the inside out.
Yesterday morning at around five o'clock the first gas leaks were found. At that time, the material that was forced out reached heights of up to one meter. This spout caused damage to a concrete drainage while the mud was finding it's way to the main road. This powerful leak only lasted an hour before subsiding somewhat.
"Measurements show that the gas consists of some 20 percent methane, which is highly flamable," said Yogi Yuristama, an employee of the body that has to manage the mud flow. Residents are asked not to smoke or so light fire near the leakage. At the moment it is not clear what will happen next. The area has been closed by a police line.
