JAKARTA - He was most probably completely absent-minded when he decided that the grave of some dead descendant of Muhammad in Koja, northern Jakarta, should become a national historic monument. Jakarta governor Fauzi Bowo made this decision less than 24 hours after a bloody riot between civil police and members of the radical islamic FPI ('Front Pembela Islam', Islamic Defenders' Front) yesterday.
When a fairly small police force from Satpol PP arrived at the site of the grave yesterday to clean it from the already present protesters, a riot broke out. At the end over 100 people were injured at both sides and above all two people were killed in the brawl, one civil policeman and one white-dressed member of the FPI. That last one seems to be less of a sorrow though, but I am not supposed to say that out loud understandably.
Earlier today the head of the group dressed in white dresses, Habib Rizieq (150 centimeter tall, white turban on his big head and a dirty little goatee) said that he would do everything to maintain the grave - and that include killing people as well, not entirely surprisingly for such movements. And all of a sudden he is also supported by the government. Instead of demolishment, the grave will now be kept as historic site, a 180-degree turn in less than a day.
This seemingly impossible turn of events from the government is also a shocking confession that the governor doesn't have any decency and self-respect left. Above all he doesn't have the balls to face those radicals led by Habib Rizieq. Why isn't he arrested - again - and prosecuted for incitement of murder? His fiece speeches should producing evidence make very easy.

Habib Rizieq, a threat to the young Indonesian democracy.
