JAKARTA - The evacuation of the grave of Habib Hasan bin Muhammad al Haddad alias Mbah Priok, in Koja, North Jakarta, has ended in a big brawl between members of the civil police Satpol PP and members of the radical Islamic FPI (Front Pembela Islam) and FBR (Forum Betawi Rembug). The grave has to be demolished in favour of a new seaport terminal, but the Islamists have other plans obviously.
In fights between the police and the Islamists, two people were killed. One policeman was killed in a skirmish after a member of the Islamists died earlier that day. A spokesperson of the FPI said that they would maintain their stance to 'secure' the grave because it belongs to a member of the family of the prophet Muhammad.
PT Pelindo, the government-owned company that exploits seaports in the country, has said that the grave has to be demolished for the construction of a new terminal for the seaport. Until now it is still now clear however what the status of the location of the grave really is. The evacuation is pushed for by Pelindo because they feel that the grave is located at property of the company.
A spokesperson for the FPI said that they would fight to the very end, and that is what literally happened. The grave has not been evacuated yet and the situation in the area of the grave is very unclear. However normal police was sent to the location just as a back-up for the civil police, they also have now joined the clashes.
