MAUMERE - The Mount Egon volcano in the district of Sikka on the island of Flores in eastern Indonesia has shown renewed activity. Since March 30, there is an increase in the number and strength of small tremors in the volcano compared to the period starting from January 2010.
The 1,703 meter high volcano at 55 kilometers east of the district capital of Maumere caused even more and longer lasting tremors in the last few days on top of this increase. The only visible change to the volcano however is a thin cloud of smoke with a height of some ten meters above the volcano.
The Volcanic Center of the Department of Energy and Resources has said that the status of the volcano has been raised to 'aware' ('waspada'). The volcano is monitored closely as usual. The Center also advises people to stay away from the summit of the volcano because of possible unexpected changes in the activity of the volcano.
