Big flood hit Karawang area KARAWANG - A high amount of rainfall in parts of West Java Province has brought flooding to the Karawang District since March 20, 2010. Initial reports by Dadang Muchtar, the district's head, is that 10,747 houses have been flooded impacting 11,540 families with 44,071 persons living in the area.

The government has issued a two week emergency relief period (Mar 20 to April 4) to provide assistance to the nine subdistricts impacted: Karawang Barat, Karawang Timur, Telukjambe Barat, Telukjambe Timur, Klari , Rengasdengklok, Cibuaya, Batujaya, and Pakisjaya.

HOPE worldwide team has left this morning bringing some first aid and clothing assistance as well as to assess the damage and needs on the ground. The four member team is coordinating with local government, National Disaster Management Agency, and Ministry of Health.

The assessment report will determine what steps to be taken for the people impacted in the near future. Considering the high water level at three dams in the areas (Jatiluhur, Cirata, Saguling), there is high chance that more water will be released into the Citarum river to reduce the pressure that the water are giving to the dams.

With low altitude of impacted areas where rice fields are spread out, the initial fear is that the water will take time to recede. Worst case scenario is that a damage to one of the dam can cause a greater humanitarian need for the district with 2 million population.

HOPE worldwide is an international relief and development NGO serving the poor and vulnerable in over 70 countries globally. In Indonesia, our programs have benefitted over a million people in the last 16 years of service in over 13 provinces where 15 Centers of HOPE are serving. Tsunami, earthquakes, floods, landslide has continuously impact the country as climate change, urbanization, and forest degradation have bring their toll.

...and the story continues. My family is also affected in this year's floods in Bandung. I've seen movies on youtube and it's literally one metre high in the main streets, those are the good areas. The badly affected areas have seen water levels even higher than a metre. Most of it is caused by lack of maintenance to dams, bad or no sewage system, illegal logging etc etc... has been going on for many, many years but with current climate change (I don't believe in global warming but climate change is something else), the situation is worsening.
