AMBON - Hundreds of small shops that have been built on Mardika beach in the city of Ambon, have been demolished early this morning when members of the civil police arrived at the scene. Around four in the morning, a fairly large amount of Satpol PP arrived and directly started to demolish the stops, that were built everywhere without permit in recent years.
Around fifty civil police were assisted by local police and members of the army on the island when they started their clean-up work. Hundreds of of shops were torn down in a radical way. Outside hand-held tools, a bulldozer was also used to wipe out the little shops illegally built on and near the beach.
Only a hand full of students and owners of some shops made an effort to keep away the civil police by setting fire to some of the remains of the shops. They also tried to stop vehicles from accessing the scene, but eventually this didn't really work because there also was a presence of police and army.
In recent years, more and more illegal shops were built around the beach. Some of these shops were now even used as permanent residence for some of the shopkeepers, trying to make a living. Some of them were rudely awakened by civil police breaking down their door. Most of these kind of shops are built from plywood and some of them even have had an electricity meter installed by PLN.
