JAKARTA - For those unfamiliar with the way Indonesia's democracy actually works, demonstrators that get paid for just a days of demonstrating in the heart of the Indonesian capital, might sound strange. It is a fact that it happens, examples were to be found in the streets of Jakarta this afternoon as well. Today there were a number of demonstrations, at least one of them in support of president Yudhoyono.
But it can be the same people in the streets tomorrow in a demonstration against that same president. Not because Indonesian's change their opinion overnight or something, merely because the money they get for one day of demonstrating - which is in fact just a few hours - is a welcome addition in their pockets. Above all, they often also receive a free lunch and some drinks during their time on the streets.
When asked why Boy joined the demonstration in front of the presidential palace in Jakarta, he said that after he graduated from school, he was not able to find a job yet, so joining demonstrations at least brings in a little bit of money. Yudi, one of the people that was actually handing out the money, said that all people that came in groups were paid some 25,000 Rupiah per person.
The danger of this kind of money politics is when people are getting paid the same amount of money, but then for a more violent type of demonstration. Instead of lunch they then receive a jerrycan of gas and a lighter, just imagine what would happen then. For now, everything seems fine, and for those joining all these shows of force it seems to get better with the day now.
