JAKARTA - A group of unidentified gunmen opened fire at a convoy of vehicles carrying employees of US-based gold miner PT Freeport Indonesia and security officers on Sunday, the first shooting incident after a few months of peace.
At least six people, including a foreign employee and two Mobile Brigade police personnel, were injured from broken glasses during the ambush at 6:30 a.m. local time in the Mile 60 of the access to Freeportís gold mine in the Papua regency of Mimika, tempointeraktif.com news portal reported.
Mimika police officer Comr. Mada Aksanta said the police were sifting through the area to locate the attackers.
"There was an attack. Police in the highland area are hunting down the gunmen," Aksanta said. All the victims were admitted to Tembagapura Hospital.
