JAKARTA - However he just died last week, Abdurrahman Wahid, or just Gus Dur, is already on the list to become a national hero if you ask his National Awakening Party (PKB). They are not alone in their question to make a national hero from one of the founders of modern-day democratic Indonesia, as many in Indonesia see him. His burial on December 31, 2009 had movie-star allure with thousands greeting his coffin.
While just president for a short period, many in Indonesia see Gus Dur as the founder of the modern Indonesian democracy after the 32-year rule of Suharto. He was the first person to be able to change Indonesia in something more modern and he even tried to stand up against corruption. He failed in this last one, but he managed to push through some secular laws in his time in office.
The National Awakening Party said Sunday it would officially request the government to declare the late former president Abdurrahman "Gus Dur" Wahid as a national hero. "This is our effort to accommodate public demand," PKB faction chairman Marwan Ja'far said as quoted by Kompas.com. "We will send an official letter to the government." Marwan thanked the public for proposing Gus Dur as a national hero.
