BANDUNG - Plans for an eight kilometer long subway in the city of Bandung, the capital of West Java Province, seem to be nothing more than a dream. A Chinese investor that apparently showed some interest in constructing the first 'tube' in Indonesia eventually was not that interested and withdrew itself from the plans. Constructing the eight kilometer of underground train track should cost around 1.2 trillion Rupiah (850 million euro)
"From the first to the third meeting, the city council of Bandung indeed spoke about he construction of a subway in the city. This time we offer an alternative for the high-cost subway, while it should still be able to reduce traffic in the densely populated city and offer a cheap form of public transport," said Petrina, a spokesperson for the city council of Bandung.
Petrina said that the Chinese would-be investors sent some experts on building mass rapid transit from the Tong Ding Institute to do a survey on the characteristics of the city. "Constructing a subway is seen as too dangerous and too expensive. It will be much more easy to develop a public transport system above ground. In Bandung, there are not that much high buildings, which make it easier to construct above the ground," Petrina explained.
The plan now is to change plans from constructing a subway to building a form of public transport above the ground, a so-called Mass Rapid Transit (MRT). The rails will be built above the ground, but this will not be a monorail system though, because it will have two tracks. One of the experts from China said that constructing a subway under the city of Bandung would be 30 times more expensive than constructing a form of MRT above the ground.
The city council of Bandung still offers the same route to companies that want to build the line. An eight kilometer long MRT should be constructed between Cibeureum and Cicaheum, including five stations. Each of the trains will be six to eight wagons long and able to support thousands of passengers each our. The trip over the eight-kilometer MRT should take just minutes, above the dense traffic of the city itself.
