JAKARTA - The non-government environment protection organization Walhi (Wahana Lingkungan Hidup) has reported a possible case of corruption in handling the well-known Sidoarjo mud flow in East Java province. A spokesperson of Walhi, Erwin Usman, said that state funds were misused. The report has been made based on an audit done by the Financial Control Board BPK in 2007.
Some four trillion Rupiah (300 million euro) was reserved for dealing with the Lapindo mud flow. Walhi also supplied documents from the Medco mining company, in which 12 errors made by PT Lapindo Brantas while drilling are discussed. Outside the reported corruption, Walhi also said that human rights were violated on 18 different accounts. One of them was forcefully moving residents from their homes.
By reporting these findings to the Corruption Eradiction Commission KPK, Walhi states that corruption took place when issuing an official letter ordering the stop of an investigation. That letter was issued by the East Java police, seemingly to protect Lapindo. A spokesperson of KPK, Johan Budi, told that the reports from Walhi were received and that they would follow up on them following standard procedures.
"The KPK can only handle possible corruption cases where state authorities and law enforcement is involved," said Johan. He also said that the KPK has already asked the government to have a closer look at the flow of money around the Lapindo case some while ago.
