DESA BINANGUN - I didn't tell anything yet about the fact why we are in the kampung all of a sudden. In fact there is not much to tell since there is only one reason why we are here now and that is the birth of a new member of the family. A nice gave birth. She gave birth to a two-kilogram weighing, but healthy, son named David on December 3.
David is not his official name yet, because that is only given in a few days time when the umbilical cord falls of. According to Javanese traditions here, that is the moment a name is given to a newborn. No need to hurry that as well, since Indonesia allows baby's to be registered up to six months after their birth.
This tradition is simply named puput, which is short for putus pusar or 'naval cold fall-off'. The sheep that was brought in yesterday morning will be sacrificed when the child is given his name officially to assure that the newborn will have a good life. Because one can't be exactly sure when this all will happen, preparations are done without any hurry.
In recent days, some 125 people have visited to see the new baby up close and personal. That is a fairly large number for in this desa. The neighbor across the street with her newborn son Lintang, only received 40 guests. “To put things in perspective,” according to my girlfriend.
For me personally it doesn't really matter how much people visit, but for the newly born and the family it does matter to get as much visitors as possible, since it is also tradition that they all bring something to supply in the needs of a newborn baby. The dozens of bars of soap, sacks of washing powder and baby powder are evidence of those visits.
The better the family is liked in the desa, the more gifts they will receive in this manner, so at least some of the needs are paid for by the visitors. That they all come up with the same brand - the cheapest one - of baby powder and washing powder is no problem. That seems to be a tradition as well.
