DESA BINANGUN - After a completely messed up trip with a DAMRI bus from Jakarta we have arrived in the rural area of Java in the area of Cilacap. We have landed in the desa of Binangun in the kampung Sidamulya to be more precize. Most likely there are much more places named Binangun, but that doesn't really matter.
We arrived here early in the morning, so most likely most people are already informed that the londho from there and there has returned to his family-in-law. They do not know that it is not my family-in-law yet, but that doesn't matter at all. During the rest of the day, people from outside the kampung will most likely bring a visit to have a closer look. They come after the people that have already visited earlier today.
After mum, dad, the husband of a sister, nephew, niece, uncle of the neighbor and the son of the head of the desa earlier today - that is why I didn't have time to open up my laptop earlier - it is now time for the children of the people I met earlier to have a peek inside the house. I don't know a single one of them, if I have met them earlier, I still don't recognize them. Fortunately the excuse 'Indonesians all look alike for a wong londho' still works.
I just visited the neighbors across the street. A young woman was breastfeeding her baby in the opening of the door. Her husband is on Ambon to work and another member of the family is working hard to create a bamboo fence. People here in the desa don't need to hire people from outside. They all do it with their own hands here.
It is nice to be back here, although I left with a slight flu yesterday. I can get some rest here, outside some daily obligations. The skies are already filling up with dark clouds, so it will start to rain any time soon now. Sitting outside with a laptop on the table is not such a good idea when it's raining, but there are plenty of other things to do to spend your time here.
For now it is just being lazy, however that is not entirely true as well. My girlfriend has over 1,000 square meters of sawah (rice paddy) here, which will be 'inspected' tomorrow morning. There are padi (rice plants) on it already and there is a gubug to take a rest in the shadow but right in the middle of the rice fields. That is what I came here for as well.

A small road through the desa, cars are still a rarity here. © indahnesia.com
