LIPPO CIKARANG - The information panel above the LCD-television even indicates where the train is. We have just passed Kepanjen station and are headed for Blitar at a reasonable pace. Thanks to a power outlet in the wall of the train at every couple of seats and the mobile internet connection I always use, I can now even continue writing and internetting following my own biorhythm.
Soon after we left the train station of Malang just before half past four in the afternoon, staff started to walk by, offering various meals. Nasi goreng, bakso (meat balls in soup) and steak, but that is not steak as most of us know it but just a slice of processed chicken. That is a no-no for me. First I want to see their entire menu from my lazy chair before I order something.
A while later drinks were served as well. Typical Indonesian of course so expect hot tea with sugar, kopi tubruk (black coffee) and coffee with milk. I ordered a teh hangat, which set me back 4,000 Rupiah (0.25 euro). The next item would be something to eat, but I wasn't that hungry yet and I still wanted to have a look first. They would serve foud and drinks all night long, so no problem there.
Eventually I grabbed a bowl of simple bakso from the plate. Two actually, one for my girlfriend as well. Normally I don't eat much during travels, and the same goes for the period directly after a journey made. But in recent years it has improved slightly with a fresh shower, some rest and then back to normal again. The bakso was soon followed by a cold can of beer - a miracle that they even sell it on the train.
The evening had taken over by now and the quickly changing landscapes changed into a dark mass with a bunch of bright white lights every once in a while, a village or city that was. Until around midnight it was more of the same outside. We had passed Yogyakarta already, the place where I would have stepped off the train to extend my stay there if I had more time.
Unfortunately that was not an option at this moment. New appointments obstructed that possibility, but a next occasion will most likely occur early next year already. Again, the lowlands changed for hilly environment in the region west of Yogyakarta when I finally fell asleep after several efforts to do so earlier on in the evening.
