BANDUNG - The local police of East Bandung in West Java have uncovered a counterfeit money network in the area. Five people involved were arrested by the police after an investigation. One of those arrested is currently seen as the mastermind of the group, but further investigation is still ongoing. The police investigated several reports of fake money circulating in the area before making the arrests.
Viktor, a spokesperson for the police said that the counterfeiters produced and distributed their own banknotes with a value of 20.000 Rupiah (1.50 euro). The banknotes were mainly distributed in the area of Bandung. After the first arrest was made, two other suspects could be apprehended soon after. The police confiscated a computer, 13 empty ink cartridges, several new cartridges and fake money ready to distributed. However the group focused on 20.000 Rupiah bills, they also made 50.000 and 100.000 Rupiah bills.
According to the police, the counterfeit money was of low quality as the makers used the wrong kind of paper. They also hand-printed their banknotes, which produced bills of low quality. The makers can get up to 15 years in prison if convicted for counterfeiting money.
