DENPASAR - The Mount Batur volcano, located on the island of Bali shows signs of renewed activity. The first recorded eruption of the volcano was in 1804. Since then it erupted at least 28 times with intervals of between one and 39 years. Normally the 1,717 meter high volcano erupts in a strombolian eruption where lava just flows out of it's crater. The last eruption as on July 7, 2000.
In the last months, mainly since September this year, the number of tremors inside the volcano has increased dramatically. These tremors are only measures by sensitive equipment though, no human can feel this kind of tremors occurring deep inside the volcano. With the increase in numbers of tremors, the length of the tremors that occur also lengthen.
Since September the volcano shows some small exhaust of smoke from it's crater. Since November 7 the volcanic activity increased significant until around 18:30 local time the next evening. Based on the above observations, the status of the volcano has been raised from 'normal' to 'careful'. Observations are ongoing and possible changes in the activity are directly relayed to government emergency response teams in the area.
People are strongly advised not to climb the summit of the volcano as long as the status is raised. There is no need for panic however as possible actions that should be taken in the near future will be coordinated by the government emergency response teams.
