PALOPO - A landslide that occurred in the district of Wara Barat of the city of Palopo in Central Sulawesi has killed 13 residents. Directly after the landslide occurred, other residents in the area scrambled to the location to look for victims under the debris, but only bodies were pulled from the rubble.
Some of the bodies ended up in the river, which then dragged them downstream. The landslide destroyed six houses and disrupted the Trans-Sulawesi highway between the Palopo and Tana Toraja. Heavy monsoon rains have hit the area in recent days, which caused the slopes to become soaking wet before they gave away. Landslides are common in the very mountainous area.
