JAKARTA - The Mount Karangetang volcano on the island of Sitaro in North Sulawesi has just started erupting. The volcano exhausts hot lava and volcanic debris from it's crater. The volcano rumbled to life two days ago but the intensity of the eruption was still increasing.
The sudden eruption surprised local residents which panicked when the eruption started. However the Karangetang volcano is a very active volcano that erupts almost every year, it is rare for the volcano to exhaust molten rock into the sky. Normally the volcano only exhausts smoke and ash clouds. The regent of Sitaro, Toni Supit, has advised his residents to be alert.
The alert status of the volcano has been on 'careful' since June this year, but it did not cause an eruption on a scale like this since then. The last big eruption of the volcano was in 2003, when thousands of residents had to be evacuated from it's slopes. The Karangetang volcano is one of the most active volcanoes on the planet and is located at some 150 kilometers from the city of Manado in North Sulawesi.
