JAKARTA - Yesterday, hours of recorded wiretaps were broadcasted live on Indonesian television when showed in the Constitutional Court after months of accusations between the national police and the corruption watchdog KPK. The tapes involve key law enforcement officials and put even more pressure on president Yudhoyono to defend his anti-graft credentials.
The conversations, held between prominent members of the Attorney General's office and police force are linked to bribes involving millions of dollars, cars and also a plot to frame two members of the Corruption Eradication Commission in a fake extortion case. While corruption and graft is rampant in Indonesia, never before such secret actions have been made public like this.
The recordings were played as the Constitutional Court was to decide whether suspending Chandra Hamzah and Bibit Samad Riyanto, both members of the KPK, was correct. They were arrested last week after the conflict between the corruption watchdog and the corrupt Indonesian police force escalated. After several hours, a spokesperson for the national police, Nanan Sukarna, said that the tapes were released for the interest of the nation, but charges were not to be dropped.
"Prosecutors will continue the legal process to bring them to trial and let the court decide whether they are guilty or not," he said. The dragging case, in which new elements seem to emerge every day now, is a challenge to President Yudhoyono, who was recently re-elected for his second term in office. In recent days, students in various cities in the country demonstrated in favor of the KPK, asking the president to intervene immediately to stop the KPK from being destroyed by corrupt people in the country.
