NGANJUK - The Sancaka train on route from Surabaya to Yogyakarta derailed near the village of Awar-Awar, Wilingan, in the regency of Nganjuk in East Java last evening. The cause of the derailment is not known yet. The train left from Surabaya at 17:00 local time, and should arrive in Yogyakarta around 23:00. Many people on several stations were stranded because of the derailment.
Early in the morning on Sunday, most passengers were still waiting for a train at the Bagor train station. Similar sights at the main train Station of Madiun, where people waited for hours for their train to arrive. Eventually a part of the passengers decided to trade in their tickets for another train later on. Hundreds of others are still waiting for buses arranged by PT KA ('state owned railroad company') that would take them to their destinations.
The derailed train was eventually cleared from the track at around 02:00 local time. Heavy equipment to help with the evacuation was only send to the location of the derailment some five hours after the accident occurred. Soon after the derailed wagon was removed from it's position, train services were picked up again. Because most railroad tracks in Indonesia are single tracks, problems often cause huge delays throughout the network.
