JAKARTA - The ongoing war between the Indonesian police, known to be one of the most corrupt bodies in Indonesia, and the corruption watchdog KPK with president Yudhoyono in the middle is heating up once more after the arrest of two other top members of the KPK two days ago. President Yudhoyono asked the police once more to release any evidence related to the case, because until now the police only pointed fingers but never produced any evidence.
The police is said to have tapes in which the name of the president is mentioned in a plot against the two members of the corruption watchdog. Yudhoyono urged the police - once more - to open up those files to be made public. Yudhoyono said that people had the right to know what is said on the tapes and whether there indeed id a plot against Chandra Hamah and Bibit Samar Rialto.
"Open up the records, explain the contents, and carry out a thorough investigation. They said my name had been cited; I don’t know anything about that. I’ve never communicated with the people recorded. I’ve been hurt; awfully hurt." President Yudhoyono at a press conference at the Presidential Palace.
Yudhoyono added that he ordered the national police chief, Bambang Hendarso Danuri, to investigate the wiretap records that the current chairman of the KPK, Tampa Hatorangan Panggabean claimed to have. Although no data from the taps has been made public, transcripts of what is assumed to be records of the tapes are circulating in the media.
The wiretap records are allegedly of conversations between middleman Ary Muladi, Anggodo Widjojo (the brother of graft suspect Anggoro Widjojo) and several high-ranking officials from the Attorney General’s Office and the police, as they apparently discussed framing Bibit and Chandra. A conversation between an unidentified woman and a man believed to be Anggodo, Yudhoyono was alleged to have given his support for action against them.
