JAKARTA - A big fire at the traditional market of Mampang, along Jalan Bangka IX in Jakarta, has destroyed the market completely. The fire brigade received information about the fire around midnight local time and sent 17 fire trucks to the location to battle the flames. Around two o'clock in the morning, the fire had largely been put out and fire crew was busy cooling down the smoldering remains of the market.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known. There were no people inside the building when it caught fire. Traditional markets have a poor safety record in Indonesia. Fires break out regularly mainly because of bad maintenance which causes short circuit. Once a fire starts, the market buildings are easy targets for the flames since they are full with goods.
